How hard is it to complete a Half Dollar collection by year and mint mark excluding silver coins just from roll hunting? About how many rolls will need to be searched? And what are some of the harder dates? So far, I haven't completed any sets of any coin, but I'm about 3-4 coins away on a couple. How long would it take to get this close to a complete set with the Half Dollars? Edited by vince220 08/10/2008 3:01 pm

up until 2000 its not real difficult but then the mint stopped releasing the Kennedies for circulation .so the last several years will not be found in circulation .
and of course the silver issues 64 thru 69 are not going to be readily available although they can be found , and the 70 was not released for circulation it was available only in the mint and proof sets .

Over the last ten months, I've roll-hunted somewhere around $1200 in halves. I've found everything from 1964 to 2001 except for '67, '70 D, '87 P and D, and the proof-only issues. Post-2001, all that I have found are seven examples of '02P.
The proof-only issues that turned up were '74S, '76S, '77S, '93S, and a '01S that had gone through a fire.

I finished the whole set after went thru $46,000. In my case, 87D was the second last coin and 03D the last coin to be found. I bought 70D from a dealer.

I actually tried to do the same thing your doing. Picked up 1000 dollars in halves thinking I would easily be able to complete a set. Well, after TWO thousand dollars I'm still missing those NIFC's (not intended for circulation). These, I predict, I am probably going to have to end up purchasing. These dates are the '70 (40% silver), 87 P&D, and anything over 2001. So, excluding those dates, its likely to believe that you can have a complete clad set of Kennedy half dollars in one thousand dollars. Thats two boxes, 100 rolls, 2000 individual coins. You may, however, need to search through more since Kennedy half dollars from the '80s, for whatever reason, are a minority. Federal reserve boxes ordered from your bank would be the simplest way to complete a clad set. You may even find some silver. Remember, these are the special dates should keep aside.... anything '70 and below the 1987 P&D anything dated above 2001 Proof, or 'S' mint coins There are also some special mint issue and variety coins that you may want to look for, but someone else could probably help you better with that.

So the 1987 and post 2001 coins are actually NIFC?

Nevermind, it turns out 1987 just had extremely low mintages and the last year for circulation was 2000.

The 1987 and 1987-D were never released to the banks for circulation. They could only be found in the annual mint sets.

since begining my search last year I have found all regular issues except for 70d, 07p, 08p and 08d. I have also found all proofs from 69 to 89 except for 82 and 88. I also found the 97s and 06s. I also found about a third of the walker dates half the franklins and a washington carver 52, and statue of liberty 86s and 86d. Plus a jamacan 1975 half dollar, a panamanian 62 half balboa, and a blue guitar pick.

Xavier, how many halves have you gone through to find half the Franklins and a third of the Walkers?

ive gone through a few dozen boxes of halves since ive started, I usually try to go through at least one or two a week. For the franklin series I have 20 out of the 35: 50, 50d, 51, 51d, 51s, 52, 52d, 53d, 54, 54d, 57d, 58, 58d, 59, 59d, 60d, 62d, 62d, 63, 63d. For the walkers I have 24 out of the 65 in the series: 18, 18s, 20, 27s, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 41, 41d, 41s, 42, 42d, 42s, 43, 43d, 43s, 44, 44d,45,45d, 46, and 47. I have yet to find anything earlier than a walker or any franklin or walker proof, though I did find a 69d with a rimcud. I do think its possible to finish a set of franklins from circulation, though walkers are another story.

Quote: For the franklin series I have 20 out of the 35 That is incredible! Only five of my Franklin half dollars came from CRH. I have found more than five, but they were duplicates that I traded in at the coin shop.
