What do you all think about these new ebay changes to take effect, some shortly, some in October?

http://pages.ebay.com/sell/August20...index.html#3

Abbreviated version:

We're taking steps to give sellers the most dynamic marketplace on the Internet: reduced upfront cost, optimized exposure, and a more consistent buyer experience to drive more sales.
Reduced upfront fees for Fixed Price:
List multi-quantity items up to 30 days for just 35¢
We're lowering the upfront cost of selling in Fixed Price with a great new package of benefits:

New 35¢ Insertion Fee, regardless of asking price or item quantity
NEW 30-day duration at no extra cost with automatic renewal option to boost efficiency
Adjusted Final Value Fees - reduced in some categories
Boost in exposure based on listings' recent sales
This is the perfect opportunity to list more inventory in Fixed Price at a low upfront cost--including moving your best Stores inventory to full exposure on ebay.

Plus, we're holding the line on current fees for auction-style listings. When you
start pricing low, and with ending-soonest exposure, auction-style listings are still
the best deal on ebay.

Driving more sales with a more consistent buyer experience
We're taking other steps to ensure buyers keep coming back to ebay:

Limits on shipping and handling charges in some categories
Big seller rewards for free shipping, including free subtitle, a boost in search results, and double PowerSeller fee discounts
No more checks and money orders
New seller standards: Minimum 4.3 on all DSRs

More relevant search results to drive more sales: We're optimizing Best Match to surface the inventory most relevant to each buyer and show the best of Auction-style and Fixed Price.
Get more information about these important changes. You're also invited to participate in one of several webinars scheduled for August 20-26.

Also, carefully look at the new Final Value Fee structure. In most categories, there are hikes, but in other categories, declines. ebay gives examples and in every case they favor the seller in savings, but notice that the examples are often multi-duration attmepts to sell an item. If you sell the item the first time in 7 days and don't have to relist, in most cases, the FVF hikes will casue you to lose money, but they largely stay away from examples like that to make it appear they are trying to save you money.

I like how that's just slipped in there innocently, hoping people won't notice?

Yada, yada, yada...imposing PayPal on buyers/sellers isn't what I'd call a "dynamic marketplace".

Or you could use ProPay. I checked out their fees and they were higher than PayPal.

Agreed, PayPal fees aren't that bad, I'm just bothered by fewer payment options. I know a few good coin sellers where checks/MOs worked quite well for them. I regard this as expanding market share without actual improvement or innovation--my usual ebay rant, sorry.

I think this is just a ploy by ebay and PayPal to maximize their profits. They're pushing everything in the direction of the buyers, and leaving the Sellers out in the cold! ebay has a reputation for being the go-to place for anything. What happens when they lose half the people selling things on their website?

Final Value Fees for DVDs, Video Games, etc is up to 15.00%. Once again, it is hidden. The problem is that there is no other good auction site that offers so much stuff.

Although I have sold a few things on ebay I am primarily a buyer. I don't care for Paypal's policies, & when I had a Paypal account I was constantly getting "phishing" emails from people trying to scam me. I will not sign up again, so I guess ebay will be losing at least one customer.

I remember when Google Check-Out came out as a competitor to paypal. Lots of ebayers wanted to use it. ebay didn't allow it. Their justification was that it was new and unproven and so on, unlike their beloved paypal. They considered it in the same category as alternative currencies like eGold. Balderdash, of course, but that was their claim.

Now, from their FAQ about 'will other payment methods be allowed': Google's and Amazon's products and services compete with ebay on a number of levels, so we are not going to allow them on ebay.

At least now they're open about their motivation.

I think that disallowing checks and money orders is one of the ways ebay is trying to cut down on the NPB situation that was created when they stopped allowing sellers to leave negative feedback for buyers. I know we have had a lot more NPB's than we ever have before and ebay has to refund all of the fees in that case.

I am sure that there are sellers who will find a way to please their regular customers who don't have Paypal accounts and don't want to pay via credit card.
Rest in Peace

No checks and money order....if they tried to bring that in Australia the ACCC would step in like when they hammered ebay with their paypal only policy. I doubt ebay would be trying too much in Australia at the moment as they were kaned by the ACCC.

You know...I think I would pay to see that. ebay would be a better service if they could be persuaded to address end-user's needs vs. simply "looking good" -- guess who benefits with the latter approach? Anyway, I hope Oztion succeeds over there.

The ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) basically said that paypal was one of the least safe ways to pay, and that buyers and sellers have the right to choose how to complete the transaction. Along with quite a few other slaps on the wrist. ebay came out very much the worse for wear.

Won't bother me a bit. I always pay with PP and don't
accept anything else when I sell. It is way too easy.
Why worry with spending time, money, and postage just
to send or accept paper?

I haven't bought anything that wasn't listed with PP
in years!
