I'm having a hard time believing this one. I have the feeling the dealer I bought this from didn't examine it too close when he bought it.

I was looking through the junk bin at my local shop when I noticed an OLD whitman folder. It was made sometime during the late 40's early 50's. (no copyright date on it, S mints placed before D mints.)

Anyway it was pretty obvious that the dealer had pulled the keys as there was a difference in toning on the album amongst several of the holes... Some holes were dark, some were light.

To be specific I think this set was complete minus the S VDB and 14D.

Anyway, the folder had 84 pennies in it with the latest date being the 45D. Price Tag of $10... I almost didn't buy it because the coins were really dark, but worst case scenario I figured it was nearly 2 rolls of good seed wheats for roll sales so I bought it.

I also bought a few other folders, (Another Lincoln, not as complete for $2.50 and 2 Jefferson Folders that had a face of $5.80 for $5. When I left I was most excited about the Jeffersons as I knew I hadn't lost any money there!

After getting it home I set it off to the side and nearly forgot about it. I'm telling you some of these coins were really ugly. But for some reason I woke up early today and without anything to do, thought I'd go back through what I bought yesterday and see if there was anything worth pulling...

Was there ever... I'm a fairly conservative grader... but I think I have these pretty spot on. I've placed 2008 RedBook values beside them. I know they're high, but even if they're 2X to much...

11P - F $1.25
15D - VF $4
17D - EF $9.5
18S - VF $2
20D - EF $8
21S - VF $4
23S - VG $2.5
24S - VG $1.25
26D - VF $1.30
28P - EF $2
28D - EF $3
30D - AU $4
34D - EF $2
38S - EF $1.1
41D - AU $3
41S - AU $4

AND FINALLY

22D - G $10

EDIT: Adding image / fixing gramatical errors / prices

EDIT2: Also the 38S is a neat one. It's obviously an EF coin, but the LIB in LIBERTY is really faint, and the O in ONE CENT is only about half there. I figure it's either a Grease Filled Die, or an overpolished die.

I'm not a Lincoln collector, but I love getting a good deal. Sounds like this was a good one, congratulations.

That was a SUPER deal, the cents look great, all original! I would have bought that for $10 without a single thought!

Nice find! I am a huge proponent of checking out the "junk bins" for the simple treasures that make your day.

I've only searched "junk bins" a couple of times.......but it's nice hearing this and very encouraging too !.....need to do this MORE !!.....
Wrongly, I've always thought that it'd be next to impossible to find something considered a "goodie" in there.....but thanks to the forum, I'm learning otherwise !!
And it might just be a "goodie" to me too !.....which is fine !...

springcypress by local dealer has very similar deals that I get from him a couple times a year. The few that really stick out are:

1. 1909-1959 Whitman folder mostly full with only the key dates missing for $10. Someone did a quick look but not close enough because a few on the cents were worth way more than what I paid for the entire folder.

2. 1940-1960 Whitman folder complete with a 1955/5 cent where 90% of the set was AU+ for $15.

3. There was one more folder similar to these but I can not remember exactly what it was because I quickly took all the cents out and placed them in my Dansco folder, but I know I did not pay more than $10 for it also.

I think it is funny because when I go in there are a total of four different people that work there and one of them knows that most of my money goes into the half off area, cents and supplies and he does not seem to like that. It is to the point that he will not give me discounts anymore so I just make sure I go on Friday's when he does not work and get even better deals.

Do you mean the famous 1955 DDO--or the "poor man's doubled die"? If the big one, I sure hope you jumped at that opportunity.

Oh yeah...

I believe it is the poor man's, based on this earlier thread, which is why I had Dejà vu while reading his post!

Quote:
The first thing I got was an older Whitman folder (actual sliding plastic pieces) of Lincoln cents from 1941-1972 for $10 (I can never pass up Lincolns for some reason). At first I did not think much except it was nice it had all the coins and 95% AU or better and nothing below VG, until I noticed the 1955/5. I know this is not a huge find, but was nice to see in the set and like a bonus coin for me.

Quote:
Yes, the 1955 is a poor mans double die, if it was an actual double die I think the set would have been a little more expensive.
