I sold off my big honkin' 1911-D lamination cent and bought this one for pretty much the same dollars. The 1911-D is a better date, but I think overall this is a better error coin for my collection.

Sweet pick-up and amazing how sharp the line is between the normal coin surface and split planchet.

Nice "trade" tropicalbats. Nice three way bidding war on your 1911.

Very cool! I've never had the privilege of seeing a split planchet in person. Again, very nice coin!

I was happy with the results from the 1911-D auction. Most laminations that strong and on a good date only come up as buy it now coins at relatively high prices, but I let mine go at auction. Even with the multiple bidders I think the buyer got a really fair deal on the coin. Not a bargain, but not overpaying either.

Hey CoinHunter, After picking that clamshell out of a collection the other day I got to thinking that it really needed a nice companion coin to show what it looks like inside the coin. I have a fairly nice split planchet, but it's AU and has a gash so wanted something more striking and this one came up and I was sold.

Sounds like it was a good pickup to me! I like my coins to go in sets too. I'm currently working on putting together a set of the 3 or 4 Strong doubled eyes (raw not slabbed) for the 1942 LWC listed in the CherryPickers Guide. Not a big set or anything exciting but they interest me and I already have FS-104, which is the harder one to acquire at a URS-4. The others should just be a matter of coming across them. Again, a very nice coin!

Those eyes aren't so easy to find. I've got an extra FS-103 in maybe F-12 if you want it to help out (send me a PM). And good luck on the set as it's a worthy one.

Most severe one I've seen.
It would have been so neat to get the other piece of the split with Lincoln's bust on it!
(Although I did find one split before the strike that was only 1.5 g if I remember correctly.)

Thanks tropicalbats for the offer but I think I'm going to try to assemble it by searching some more. Very much appreciate the offer and the kind words. I can use the luck!

That is brilliant! It's like that error was perfectly placed, leaving the date visible and pristine! !
