Collect what you enjoy and can learn from. You will lose money when you sell so plan accordingly.

The more quickly you want a coin, the more you will pay. Patience pays off with a lower overall cost.
Corollary:
The more quickly you want to sell a coin, the less you will get.

Not my quote, some coin collector told me this when I started the hobby,
"Coin collecting is a hobby where you can spend all your money and still have some left behind."

If your just starting out in this hobby I feel that it's important to start a log book to document your collection as you build it. It's much easier than waiting for a few years and having hundreds if not thousands of coins to document. It also easier for your next of kin in the event of your demise!
