Hello everyone, new member here.

My father in law and I have been going back and forth about this coin. He is dead set convinced that this coin is worth millions. He said he received it for doing some house construction for some old lady about 15 years back, had it tested and found out it was real gold. He claims that in his research that there were only 7 ever made. He says its a California gold Fractional coin.

Ever coin shop around our area that I show the pictures to say it may be a token or a replica. I'm not sure what to think, I doubt its a million dollar coin, but I am having trouble finding more information on the internet about it.

Looking for some help or someone who could point us in the right direction!

IMO it's a fake. The color is wrong, and a 50C fractional wasn't that big. The strike is off, and it has the look of a Chinese counterfiet

I think Granny might have snookered ya Dad for some free work.Did you try to crack it open and see if it has chocolate in side? JK If it Is a fifty center coin/token,It has to be gold plated. Perhaps a promotional coin or token?

I'm fairly sure that's fake. PCGS doesn't show any 50c pieces for the date 1849. Also, I don't think the "cent symbol" was in use on these. They typically used just a "C" or a fraction (1/2) to indicate value.

@js194, first welcome to CCF. Second, I am intrigued by your statement:

Could you please provide some more information about this? Do you maybe have the test report or at least know what type of (hopefully) non-destructive test was performed? I'm interested to see if the test might have been only able to determine if the surface was gold (i.e. the coin could be gold plated) or if it was able to assess the composition more deeply. Thx!

Jeweler's copy / token, I can't find a BG match and don't see any 50c denoms for 1849 either. It may or may not be real gold or gold filled, and if it is real gold it is likely very low karat.

This is likely one of many fakes that flooded the market in the 1970s, probably made of brass. Novelty and of no value.
