Picked this up for $32. Thoughts on grade and problems? Thanks!

Great coin!

Your coin has the typical Type I strike, partly caused by the relief of the design. It could just be the photo, but the obverse appears to be slightly MAD and late middle die state. A small ding in the hair above the braid and what appears to be contact marks across the high cheek are the only real marks visible, though the shadows could hide some marks. There are die polishing marks obscuring the common die clash below the chin. The obverse photo is just a little out of focus, so I hesitate on the possible cheek contact marks. Overall, the obverse looks to be MS-63, and possibly MS-64, depending on the appearance of the cheek with the coin in hand.

The reverse is sharper. There is a clear full split tail, a soft but rounded horn, average detail on the eye and beard, but strong definition on the rear legs and FIVE CENTS. The hair on the head and top of the back is fairly well defined. The common die clash exists at EPU. There is one distracting mark in the visual center of the buffalo's flank, and two small contact marks on the front shoulder. I think the reverse is a solid MS-64.

Unless something else is lurking in the shadows on the obverse, I could see a blended grade of either MS-63 or MS-64 here, and I'm leaning toward MS-64. You did well at $32. Again, great coin.

Did you crop out part of the rim, or is it in a 2x2 ?

these are seller's pics. the coin was photographed at an angle and I couldn't get it fully back to round, so yes, the rim is partially/slightly cropped out at northeast and southwest in both pics. it is in a 2x2.

thanks for the terrific analysis as always fortcollins

Lots struck, but not many survive in this condition!

Very attractive to a type collector, because it is a one year type.

There are many in the CCF with better skills than mine, when it come to grading Buffalos in top condition. I have to admit however, I can find very little wrong with it, even after careful on screen examination.

A real nice 13 type-1 . Love the Hair braid ,horn full , ok but not razor sharp . Also love that split tail . Buffaloes complete face is too soft as well as the 2 large feathers on obverse . Still warrants a 64+ in my opinion .

If the typical opinion of MS64 is right, then $32 is a 'steal'!
