Its been a very long time since I visited the forum and
while going through my collection today I noticed something
which eluded me , a possible error coin.

Welcome back @2taol! Just to be clear, are you looking at the rough region on the surface of the coin around the date or the potential rim fin?

Hi Spence, thanks for posting.

My main focus was the rough area around the date.
The fin is a bonus I suppose !!

Looks like struck-through grease or water.

Ok thanks for the clarification. The harp is slightly worn from circulation, right? Assuming so, that makes it difficult to know whether the area around the date was struck through grease or is just random damage. My best guess is the latter, but I look forward to seeing what others think.

Thank you aristarchus123 and apence.
The coin has had very low circulation,
strange to think wear happened to one side in a specific location
and without affecting both sides.
Would this be related to the fin on the rim I wonder

This coin has seen very little circulation, looking at the unmarked fields. In fact, most 2000 Irish 1 coins were only in circulation for a year or so before they were replaced by the Euro. Looks like a greasy die to me!
