NGC - The specimen is notable for its exceptional strike and provenance.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) has certified one of the first 10 Morgan dollars struck by the San Francisco Mint. This incredible piece of numismatic history is now graded NGC SP 64.

Hundreds of millions of Morgan dollars were struck from 1878 to 1921. Today, they are among the most popular coins with collectors because of their classic design, large size and historical significance. Nearly 4 million examples have been certified by NGC.

Edit: Changed the CAPS emphasise to the correct word.

I have one of the 1878 8tf VAM-9 Morgan's which is one of the first few hundred. Not nearly as cool as this one!

Is yours slabbed Yokozuna? And if it is (or isn't) what grade is it?

Not only is it a cool first issue, it's also a rare longnock VAM 62.

Re: The 8TF VAM 9 . I've picked about a dozen in my vamming career that started in 2008. Highest grade was a PCGS 55 followed by a PCGS 53. I suspect the extent population of that die-pair exceeds the reporters claim of 300 coins before the die broke.

Not sure where you would find them, but I believe there are coins out there from the first striking ceremonies.

The one from the anon east coast collection (doesn't have the engraving though) was certified by PCGS as SP65 finest known.

Here is a link to the VAM World page on the Eliasberg coin - pre slabbing and a bunch of info on the long nock dollars from 1878-S, my favorite VAMs - why?

The VAM 72 discovery coin is one I found in 2001 in a dealer's junk dollar bucket, in San Marcos, California (my home at the time). I purchased it for only $9.00 as a junk silver dollar. I had it as am F/VF Long Nock but hadn't nailed down the VAM # at the time I decided to trade it to Larry Briggs at a Long Beach show in 2001 for a few other VAMs and some 2 cent pieces.

It ended up being a new Long Nock variety, VAM-72 now in Larry's SEGS holder, oh well... I still made around $1K on the deal.

Cool - but nowhere near as cool as this engraved Morgan with an incredible provenance.
