Hello all, I am new to the numismatic world and need some help with a 1881 s Morgan I recently purchased on ebay. I am concerned the coin may have been dipped. Also when I received the coin I noticed a decent gash on the cheek, is this worth grading with this scratch? or will it come back scratched? The description on ebay said ms+++ dmpl proof-like. Also, if graded what are your thoughts?

I appreciate the help and value your experience.

to CCF. The "scratch" looks more like a "rim ding" from another coin. Coin does not look ms+++ dmpl proof-like.
1881-S is known for high grade strong strike coins, this does not look like one to me. Wait for a pro or two to chime in.

Looks like a nasty bag mark on the chin. What did the seller grade it, and how much did you pay? Can you return it?

Does not look DMPL or PL, quite possibly dipped, and the heavy bag mark on the cheek is very distracting. I would try to return it if you can.

Seller did not grade it, the coin was in a 2x2 labeled ms+++ unc, dmpl proof like. the auction went to $49.00, after some research I am finding out that these sellers are masters of manipulating the picture.. should have just stuck with slabs. What suprises me is that these sellers have 99.9% - 100% feedback on ebay. Major buyers remorse:/

that dig on the cheek is probably bad enough to details it. stay away from any coins where the photos are not top notch. it is so easy to hide things using lighting and angles and these guys are masters at that.

Tip: post here for comments before purchasing if possible

It's not a DMPL or PL, the hairlines indicate it has been cleaned or wiped with a cloth. It is best never to buy a coin from photos like those used to sell this coin. They are bad for a reason, usually to hide something.

with Mr. GoldEagle.

Always assume poor photos are intentional to hide something. Best thing to do in buying DMPL is to buy graded coins.

In general the more superlatives written on a 2x2/flip/seller stickers on slabs the worse the coin tends to be

Essentially any DMPL morgan is worth having graded, so if it's still raw there's likely a reason for it
