Awesome pick! I need to have my eyes peeled for the 1966 SP DDO. Congratulations!

Excellent GrapeCollects

I don't see polish lines or a grease struck through problem. If so, I would consider this a TRUE "NO FG". They forgot to put it on the die?

Thanks CoinHunter and E&V! I haven't looked for the 66SP DDO yet, not nearly as interesting to me as it is a majority working hub doubling issue, so it's not die exclusive.

@LOM I think it is an omission issue, but for what reason it exists I have no clue.

It is part of the design. So it is not an omission issue. The initials were polished off. If it were an omission issue, then all the coins would be missing the initials. Die events, not a variety coin. On the example in the circle, I can still see where the initial was/is. Another example to create interest in a collectable. (Which to me is not a Variety)

Also this coin looks like it was polished. The SMS coins are not proofs. More of a satin finish.

It does look that from the photos cooper. But I can promise the surfaces are original. It's intact in the OGP

Wow, the rotations on those coins are horrendous. Anyway, nice find with the No FG. Like coop said, it is due to die polishing, not original omission. Are you sure this case hasn't been opened before to allow some fooling around?

As a side note, your title is almost pure numispeak. I understood it, but how many of your friends would? LOL

I'm sure coop and yourself are correct. I'm pretty sure it's original. A lot of SMS sets have coins that look like that. They have kinda cruddy matte black proof-like surfaces with no brilliance or cameo.

And that is pretty funny, didn't even think about that

(Not to hijack your thread GC and if it is better to start another thread, can a mod please place the following question in a new thread? Thanks.)

One thing that stood out to me in Coop's stacked images of the Proof above the SMS, was the lite NW to SE lines below right of the ear.

When I went to the PCGS price guide site (LINK Here [url]https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-50c/6706[url]) I see it on one of the 3 business strike images presented on the page.

A question that comes to mind is whether those lines are on the Master die and only visible on VEDS coins or were the lines on proof/SMS dies that may have been repurposed for business strikes?
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Those 1966 & 1967 SMS sets were not sealed so someone could unsnap the holder and swap or tamper with the coins.

It's possible. I can't see any hairlines in hand or anything. You all might be right. Either way I plan on sending it in with my next slabbing package so we'll find out then.
