Heritage Auctions - Our February 20-23 Long Beach US coins Signature Auction features an utterly spectacular example of the 1861 cent the key date among copper-nickel, Oak Wreath cents (1860-1864). The 1861 is elusive in Gem condition, scarce in Premium Gem, and rare in Superb Gem grades. This coin, graded MS68 by NGC, is tied with only one other example at PCGS for finest numerically certified. It is hard to imagine an example in better condition.

There are essentially no distractions on either side. A touch of incompleteness on the feather tips is unavoidable for the 1861 issue, present on nearly every Superb Gem coin we have seen. Glowing amber-gold surfaces showcase hints of orange and blue color. The surfaces are absolutely immaculate and equally eye-appealing.

Wouldn't you love to know who saved this back in 1861? Did they set it aside because it was so beautiful and seen as something special?

Thanks for showing this. Its cool how if you kind of step back, you notice the "ONE CENT" on the reverse is a little more orange then the rest of the reverse. Really cool how it appears to stands out. Very nice.

I love the die cracks on the reverse but especially the one on the neck, but that's the IHC variety collector in me.

Wonder if Rick & Charmy will both be in the hunt for this one...
