Maybe I should say Liberty with Headdress series. Anyway I have been trying to add decent examples from ebay to add to the 18 coins I already own. It is astounding as you wade through the tons of culls listed on ebay, how few decent, circulated examples there are. When I do locate a coin I want, the competition is fierce. Reminds me of the completion of my Buffalo nickel set. Anyway, I have been the winning bidder on ten coins the last two weeks and have spent over a hundred dollars. I have completed the copper-nickel dates and a few others. I am a little daunted by the cost of this series, especially in the 70's dates. There are quite a few semi-keys with big prices. I think I will buy an album and rest for awhile. Anyone else out there who has completed this series? I need a pep talk. I love the design and have since I was a kid. A real "vintage" coin with a lot of history.

I was going to start one, but since you are in USA and having this difficulty with this series, I dont think its wise to start it while I am in Egypt.
Wish you luck with your collection

Quote:It is astounding as you wade through the tons of culls listed on ebay, how few decent, circulated examples there are And quite frankly, more than half there is complete junk. More troubling is that many "nicer" coins sold on ebay will show signs of cleaning once inspected. I've bought many IHCs on ebay and while I think I have a good eye, I often find undisclosed problems. Now I only buy IHCs I can inspect in hand--at shops or shows.

I have several sets of those and the #1 set is fantastic. Complete except for the so called 1869/9. I really don't think that should be a slot in the album so I sort of ignored that one in all sets. I've seen those at coin shows but the way I figure is if you need an electron microscope to see something, it's not worth my time. Only set 1 also has all the Flying Eagle cents. Don't know why Whitman puts those in an album titled Indian Head cents. If you really want those cheaply, you just have to find a coin show.

Just curious...how many have the complete Flying Eagle set, including 1856?

I have a near complete set. Need the 1869/9 and the 1909S. Cashed in at the flea market this weekend and upgraded a few for $2.25 each. I came across this mostly G4 set through a friend who didn't need it as much as other necessities at the moment. This set came in an old brown book with plastic sliders in it and has a slot for 1873 open and closed 3 where the new Dansco didn't. I just used a spare hole at the end for it and some double dies that were in the set. nlp

I use the Whitman Classic Albums and they all have the Flying Eagle cents in them. None of mine have different slots for the 1873 open and closed 3. Of course I purchased my albums way, way back so no idea of what is in the latest ones.

I don't have a complete set - still missing the 1877 and the 1909s. When I first started collecting coins (hasn't been all that long ago) I was in a buy, buy, buy mode - got alot of G-4 coins that I'm now replacing with XF - gets a mite expensive the further back you go. A suggestion - start out buying the nicer coins - save you the trouble, and added expense, of replacing them later.

I have the complete set minus the overdates (58/7, 67/67, & 94/94). If you're starting a collection, stick with a couple dates and only search for those dates... searching for the entire series all at once can give one a headache :) I was fortunate enough to have an honest dealer who would allow me to upgrade if a better one of a particular date came along... unfortunately, a better '77 hasn't come around since I got my VG example (to show you how long ago I got it, I only paid $190 for it. Anyways, it's a fun series to collect and very rewarding once completed. Good luck and have fun.

I agree that it seems ebay is the place to get rid of culls and other junk coins - also, I agree there is a large numbe of folks that compete with nice clean circ coins. No answer except that you find a local dealer or a trusted member of this club to supply your collection needs.

I have two complete sets. My #1 set is all F or better except for four coins- 72, 76, 78 and 09S. And I disagree about IHC mostly being culls on ebay. I know which sellers load their lots with culls and which ones don't. I have gotten a lot of outstanding IHC on ebay by bidding on the right sellers' lots. The last mixed lot I won had over 300 coins in it and only about 20 were culls. There were countless F or better pieces in there. I have gotten TWO 09S VG coins from different mixed IHC lots, along with most all other semi-keys, paying no more than about $1 per coin. So far, I never have gotten a 77 from a mixed lot.

Mycrob, it would be nice to be able to buy from your seller. At least I could affoed to buy a lot, once a month, on a fixed income. I bought a ROLL of IHC from a seller, and it cost $79.00. I would like to keep working on my IOHC and FE, but not much hope at that price. Any ideas? Thanks, Dick

i just finished my indian head set about a year ago. I got lucky and found a partial set with most of the 60s and 70s complete. it was expensive but really helped. completing the set is not too difficult; you just need patience
