Won this coin last evening and after checking every Bust Half Dollar reference I had in hand and several online I went to bed baffled. The information I've received today from several learned sources is indeed interesting and controversial...

Check it out and comment if you'd like to of course.

I'll admit that I know little about CBH's--you have me intrigued: should you be able to identify the die pair for this year...is that eluding you? If you're baffled, I would be baffled even more...hope it's a discovery piece!

More likely Kurt it's a 'discovery counterfeit' in a series which had been (up till now) impervious to the Far Eastern influx of copied classic US coins...

Hmmm...that photo had me at first, but now that you mention it--something looks odd about that coin.
Out of curiousity, I pulled an obverse off Heritage for that year with similar grade.
Is it just me, or is something off about the hair on the coin above? That cap looks all wrong.

It's hard to say simply the hair is off to make the determination. There were 13 different obverse dies used this year by the mint and they all have subtle differences. But, you have a good sense in general, the entire bust is indeed wrong for the date.

Well, I have never looked at this series before. Here is my analysis:

There are extra folds at the very front of the robes on the counterfeit (where the front of the neck would be)
The curl below the B in Liberty seems like it goes up a bit higher on the counterfeit
The stars dont look right(especially the one at the top and the bottom on the left hand side)

I am no expert, so all I can really say is that they are different.

I have to admi though, I would have been taken with this con myself, it looks like it has the appropriate age for the date.

Good luck on the return!

Considering neither the obverse nor the reverse match any of the ones used in 1833 you have either a major discovery, or a very impressive counterfeit. If it is a counterfeit then the question is "Contemporary or Modern?".

This is a very deceptive counterfeit and I expect it would have fooled me as well. So far we just haven't seen many fake bust halves. We're going to have to start being suspicious about these too!

Here's a reverse photo of an 1833 example graded AU-50 by NGC (from Heritage). Note the differences in the feathers along the right side of the shield. This is another area where the fake just doesn't look right.

I see that too--feathers are in different places in that area. Jaobler posted the reverse of the coin I pictured above.

Now we have one more thing to worry about.
Stay with lower grades, safer.

I did a search on ebay for replicate 1833 BHD and came up with a few. Ben, take a good look at this one, I have a feeling your gonna need a kiss to go with the purchase if you know what I mean.

Keep your chin up and eyes open gang... China is getting better at these daily. Computers and Lasers will do wonders.
