I just received the gift of 2 1981 Proof Sets. Does any of the experts have any clues on how to distinguish a type 1 from 2? Maybe some picture comparisons.
I tried to take a picture with my Canon Rebel, but I am have trouble getting a close up of the S. I will try again when the sun is out. Until then, if anyone can point out some good online references, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Ken

I too had some difficulty with this until I realized that the 1979 Ty 2 S is about the same as the 1981 Ty 1 S. Both are "clear S" The 1981 Ty 2 S is a clear S with FLAT FROSTED SURFACE. Best way to show this is with an image. These images were borrowed from a webpagehttp://www.bestcoin.com/Diagnostics...oof-Sets.htm1981 TYPE 1 S closely resembles the 1979 Type 2 or clear S 1981 TYPE 2 S is flat on the high points

OK so here are the pictures. Tried to take it from 2 angles. In hand with a naked eye the fields look very clear, in the picture with the glares, it looks more like type 1. What do you guys & gals think.... Angle 1 Angle 2 Full Pictures

I would say Type 1. I see a "bump" in the middle of the 'S' that is also present in Wheezydog's photos of the Type 1 mint mark.

All I can say is when you have a type 2 you will know for sure. I can't honestly say from the images which type I think it might be. I happen to have a type 2 SBA in my consignment right now with the CCF people. http://cgi.ebay.com/US-COIN-1979-S-...BA_W0QQitemZ370093741277QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 370093741277&_trkparms=72:1205%7C39:1%7C66:2%7C65:12%7C240:1318&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14 I may be wrong or correct about this, but it may be possible to have a proof set having some type 1 and some type 2 in it at the same time. I think this is a definite possibility with the 79 sets but for 81's I am not sure.

Quote: All I can say is when you have a type 2 you will know for sure If this was true there wouldn't be so many questions about how to tell them apart. It IS very east to tell the Type II 1979 coins but it is MUCH more difficult to identify the Type II 1981 coins. And sets with a mixture of type I and II are common in both years.

Duh ... Disclaimer : I might be wrong about anything at any time! However, my point is that if you HAVE a 1981 Type 2 S proof coin, all doubt will be removed, you will see the difference. Anything else is probably just wishful thinking or trying to look for something that is just not there. Who hasn't looked at a mintmark for an S over D or the like, as a noobie, and not had an eyeball bulge out on your glass from trying to see what they hoped to see. I know I went bug-eyed when I started collecting.

Those are both Type 1 MINT_MARQ. As for sets having both Type 1 and Type 2 coins for the 1981 Sets, it is possible. I have a 1981 Proof Set with a Type 2 quarter, and all of the other coins are Type 1. It's actually more common to have a mix of mintmarks than a whole set of Type 2s with the 1981 Sets.
