I noticed that smaller "tsunami" of metal also.
I'm definitely no expert but the smaller "wave" would have been where the broken die wasn't as deep. It probably topped out on the metal of the die. Whereas the top of the larger area wasn't contained at all and looks to be slightly rounded. I can picture one of Coops images of the broken die he posted recently.
