Hello friends,

I recently have received a 1788 US coin, I think it's either a Half Cent or a cent but I would like help in valuing and grading it, I have posted pictures of it below. Also here is a link I found explaining the coin. https://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/co...l?coin=17041

Thanks for all your help guys, please reply if you have any information that could help me value and sell this coin, I have seen they have previously sold for $85,000 due to its rarity, but I don't know the condition of that coin,.I am aware this coin is worse for wear.

Thanks
Louis.

Actually that coin is exceptionally nice. And it is a one cent piece. One cent 1788 Ryder 2-B, not a great rarity as a variety but it is rare in XF and up. This coin would have the sharpness or an XF-45 or AU-50, but the porous surfaces would bring is value down. Would probably be an EAC VF-30. Unfortunately I don't do colonials so I would have no idea as to value. But now that you know the variety some searching in the Heritage Archives could possibly turn up some value estimates.

Beautiful coin! Colonials just can't be valued like regular issue US coins. XX is worth XX$ in XX condition just doesn't work for them. Conder gives excellent advice, you've got some research ahead of you!

Would anyone be able to give a rough price range? Or know anywhere in the south / south east of the United Kingdom that would be able to value it?

Thank you again

If you could list it on ebay for $1000, it would sell. That's a nice coin.

Checked Heritage and a Ryder 2-B in XF - AU seems to be in the $1,000 to $1,500 range.

Anybody have thoughts on authenticity for this piece? A genuine coin worth $1000 would likely inspire a few counterfeiters. Given the relatively crude manufacture for most colonials it might be relatively easy to make deceptive fakes.

Not suggesting this is a fake but I'd be alert to the possibility.

Im no expert on coins like this, but it looks way off to me, especially the eagle's talons on the reverse.

It's real. Actually the fakes I've seen of these are really pretty bad. I compared this one to some on Heritage, and it matches up.
