It goes back to the point of looking for markers instead of the variety. Because coins go through the same processes in striking, polishing, breaking down of the dies, die events and circulation factors, looking for the markers before looking for the varieties first, is the wrong thing to do. A marker does not make a variety. A variety must be found first, then a marker can confirm/refute a match to the same die/or die state. So if your hoping a match for a marker to a coin that is not that variety, your are putting the buggy before the horse. Markers mean nothing if the variety is not there.

how can damage that happened after minting obstruct a part of the letter from being properly pressed? have you ever tried to remove a piece of the letter on ANY coin? I havent but I have to assume its nearly impossible since coins have hundreds of years of use only wear down and dont just break.

i would also like to say that the man I got this beautiful half dollar from sent it to me in a plastic that had a black cardboard insert. no date on it like I have seen on others. id have to look but the words "memorial half dollar" were definitely on it. he told me that he lived just 3 miles from the kennedy compound. he said that after the assassination of the president this coin in these plastics were being given out for free to everyone there. he said the streets were littered with the plastic cases that I received it in. so anyone that has an opinion that this coin might not be something special hardly holds the story this man has. this is the most interesting beautiful coin. looks totally different some days than others. its almost like an alexandrite gemstone.

All the marks you point out look like damage. They fit the shape of the reeding of another coin. Often times, the junk silver coins will be thrown in together, and they will all be tumbling around, hitting each other. This is how that kind of damage usually occurs. Other options include change jars, coinstars, coin bags, etc. Despite how it happened, it is damage. Keep hunting!

So in your expert opinion, during the tumbling of this coin in a bag it removed a piece of a letter on the coin?

As many people already explained. There is no error. Its damage. Maybe that's why nobody is replying, it's only damage and you want to hear anything but damage. The sentimental story of how the guy received the coin doesn't add value. It's still a normal half dollar.

Opinion on the coin... A regular circulation strike just like the countless millions of others just like it . By the way , your story cannot go unchallenged as stated . The coins that came in little plastic Snap lock cases were extremely common in Department stores and coin shops all over North America . They sold for a 1.29 in Canada , I would think a similar price in the USA. The inner insert was undated and had silver lettering on a black holder . Very very common Back in the day . The Kennedy compound story and free distribution with plastic littered all over the street is someone's bogus fairy tale !
