Hi guys,

I'm quite unfamiliar with US classic coins yet I own a few. This one is on auction in a local online auction house in Turkey, with a starting price of around $3.8 US. Do you think it's genuine and how much would be a realistic price for this coin as I am thinking of bidding a bit on it. Any insight or opinion welcome. Thanks.

The coin is a commemorative half dollar. Value for the coin in photo is around $10 US. I own one because I like the ship.

Slider23 : Thank you

It seem to been in circulation for a while and then somehow had a very dark toning. I'll bid a bit so I guess $10 is a fair amount of bidding

I'll say EF details (environmental damage).

I recommend you dont buy this coin as it is damaged - you should look from problem free examples.

JGpenny = thank you for the advice. The coin is almost $10 plus %20 auction house commission so I decided not to bid at it. I do not mind some toning or circulation on coins more than 100 years old but discolouration on this one is really quite dark. Some relatively old US coins nowadays tend to go crazy prices here in Turkey so some sort of a trend must be settling in.

Thanks for the advice!

With the rough porous surfaces and the strange coloration I have some serious doubts as to authenticity.

Conder101 : That is something else that came to my mind. The coin seems too dark and some details on the heads side seems a bit vauge to me. The auction house selling it is a reputable one here in Turkey, yet they are probably not much experienced with older US coins. I have seen them handling PCGS graded Morgans and Peace dollars before, but that one is raw. It'll probably go around $ 20 plus some commision, so I'd rather stay away from that one.

Thank you for the advices guys

For those who may wonder, it went about $25 + %15 commision in the auction. Comparing to eBay, I found this expensive.
