NGC put this guy in an MS-67 FS holder. I'm bidding on it but have some concerns it was misgraded. How strong is their grade guarantee? Doesn't look like FS or 67 to me but if I win I'll have a better feel when I get it in hand.

Return that thing ASAP!

Jefferson nickels are the most overgraded series Carte Blanche by ANY TPG. The rule of thumb, especially when dealing with FS, is ignore the TPG and judge for yourself. I kept count on a study I did. I looked through 102 MS-67 FS Jefferson nickels, and only 1 was a true FS coin. Others were 5FS or 3FS. These were a mixture of PCGS and NGC, but a majority PCGS.

My bid is only about 1/10th of the estimated market value so I feel fairly safe. Might send this one back to NGC for a grade guarantee if it's obviously not FS in hand.

Checking to see if I can retract my bid because it really doesn't even seem close.

With all the marks on the jaw and cheek bone, I can't see this above MS-65. FS....not even on a good day.

I was able to retract my bid. They added one more photo and it's very clearly only 3 steps not 5. I think the grader at NGC wasn't properly trained.

Here's the holder on this one. Kind of mind boggling since it is tied for "finest known FS" with a market value estimated at a couple $k. You would think that more care would have been taken for a registry type coin.

This is why I don't buy slabbed coins . Their are many PCGS ,NGC, and ANACS graded coins that I just don't agree with the grade . I would only buy a TPG if the coin was a top key date and only for authenticity .

I usually have issues with numerical grades, but strike designations I'm with you on.

Nowhere near FS. And no 67 IMO, I would expect a stronger strike at 67 and far less contact marks.

Bid now $650 on this one even though it's obviously neither 67 nor FS. People buy the holders not the coin nowadays.
