Yes! Since it looks like sharpie, you can dip it in alchohol, wait for 10 minutes, come back and wipe it with a cloth or paper towel.

That seriously sucks. I hope the acetone works for you.

I have found horrible attempts at coin cleaning's gone bad and someone threw them back into a roll, while I was searching. A shame cause they would have been nice coins until someone stuck them in some sort of acid or cleaner...made a beautiful dark brown cent with nice detail into a pink lifeless coin.

Yes, let us know how it works out. As for the person that marked it...

I ran into the same problem here in S.W. Michigan. I was searching Kennedy half dollars and had a bunch of rolls that had a red marker hit on them. It was a shame some of them were very nice. But I guess the person that did it was just looking for silver.

OK. So I poured about 1 inch on fresh acetone into a glass wide-mouthed jar. As soon as I placed the coin in I saw a small black cloud lift off the coin, but the mark was still as it was. So I let it soak for 10 minutes, gave it a few swirls, a little lighter. Let sit 1/2 hour, little lighter. Filled a small spray bottle with the acetone and lightly sprayed the coin and presto! Gone. There are some small traces that can be seen with a 14x loupe, but good enough for me. I didn't want to scrub the coin with a toothbrush or anything. I'm not sure if the marker actually removed the toning when applied or if it has been there for some time, but you can see where the marker was. I really don't see any difference in the coin. Photos may look different because of the lighting. Thanks for your help. It was a good experiment.
