So.... question.... this dime says 1940, minted in San Francisco.... what gives? Anyone seen this before? It weighs 2.41 grams, which seems a little light but it's also pretty worn. From what I know this coin shouldn't exist?

Couldn't be a 1940.
Roosevelt was still alive and just elected for his third term as President.
He didn't die until 1945.
Describe it as if there were no picture.
Picture it as if there were no description.

Agree, most likely a damaged 1949-S.

Yes, thinking '49. Certainly not a '40.

@justcarl

That was my initial hope! I knew though that I just had to be looking at it incorrectly...I had googled though and saw a couple other people that thought they found 1940 Roosevelts, but absolutely most likely thing is that it's a 49. My initial thought was that it was counterfeit for some reason, hence why I listed the weight...,

Although I could try to sell on eBay with the title "1940 Roosevelt dime Error Coin! Rare!!" And start bidding at $5,000 and see if there are any takers

Jk.... wouldn't do that... I just laugh at the high price "errors" I see on eBay sometimes though....

Also interesting, it looks to me like the font for the "9" has changed between 1949 and 1959. In '49 the tail comes off the number from more of the right side of the circle center, in '59 it seems to break off the circle more from the center. I'm guessing this was done to prevent "0" and "9" being confused with wear? Just looks slightly different to me.
