My first find was a 1956-D RPM-001. When I asked about value for it, I was told then: "$2.50 in the circulated condition. $25 in BU condition." That was the last bag of circulated coins. I started searching BU rolls from then forward. I finished the bag of 1200 wheat cents, I saved the roll and searched it later three times to make sure I got all the varieties. Then re-sold the bag of circulated cents. (Best to search once. Then let some time go by and learn more. Search again, and later on again. Each time I searched found something I missed, as my knowledge expanded as time went by)
By no means do I only look at BU rolls for varieties. I go through tens of thousands of circulated wheats every year. Generally though, I don't post very many of them as circulated coins are just harder to learn from as often you can't see die markers and the varieties can be harder to discern due to wear and various dings.
