Here's a new side-by-side I did of the 1982-D Large and Small date that shows the gap between the 2 and the rim. Merclover's image is perfect, this just adds a detail or two to use as a diagnostic tool.

Yokozuna's picture shows it perfectly. These are so easy to tell apart I really don't understand anyone having difficulty. Maybe when the question is asked, that picture should just be posted instead of answering!
