Hello dear forum members

I am completely new and inexperienced in collecting Morgan dollars. I hope my inquiry about the authenticity of a coin is in the right place here in the forum. I was offered the coin in the photo.

Could you give me an initial assessment of the coin based on these bad photos alone? Maybe you can already tell from these pictures whether it could be a fake? I look forward to your opinion.

Greetings from Switzerland and many thanks! Swissly

Welcome!

I'd say it's an XF grade. If that's an obverse scratch from 7-9:00, I would consider it a details/problem coin.

That it's an 1881 CC key date is what holds is value. As an individual specimen of Morgan's in general, it's not the cream of the crop.
My hoard of '82s is up to 204! 218 BC x 1, 118 BC x 3, 18 BC x 1, 82 x 1, 182 x 1, 282 x 2, 382 x 1, 582 x 2, 682 x 1, 782 x 2, 882 x 1, 982 x 4, 1082 x 1 1182 x 8, 1282 x 2, 1382 x 1, 1482 x 5, 1582 x 13, 1682 x 15, 1782 x 57, 1882 x 49, 1982 x 33

Not sure it's authentic ?
The CC looks off and the overall look
Is questionable . Colour way off .
Weight , close up of the CC would help .
Also unusual to see this grade for an 81CC.
Either G to F or Choice to Gem Unc as many
Came in the GSA Hoard . They are well struck
and pleasing much like an 81S.
My bet you have a Chinese Fake especially @ $120.
A low grade junker is close to $300.

Hello dear forum participants

the coin is being offered for USD 120.

Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to examine and weigh the coin. There are only the photos so far.

Grüezi @swissly and welcome to CCF! Knowing the weight of this piece would be helpful.

It's no doubt a counterfeit. Take a pass on this one.

Look at a bunch of the mint marks on PCGS website of this coin. The CCs all look very different than this one. Not sure if its the picture/lighting or not.

Comparative ping tone test with another common known genuine Morgan should put you on the right track to confirm if the 1881 CC is genuine or otherwise.

I'm still new at this but my 84 has a slight boy scout looking wing rothley mentioned on the right wing....however it looks like the CC has a Grease Filled Die?(still new may be making things up) but I was of the understanding that the CC was pressed separately which I would assume shouldn't cause the second C to be so weak.
