Well this is why come to you folks.i would lean more to maybe tone issue. Environmental of course, or could be copper nickle mixer wearing off exposing some of the copper tone. Come look and let me know.

Looks like the rim/edge area is starting to show the rub off on the coating on the coin. A moist wipe down will reveal this quickly on the coin. If it is a missing clad, the color will not rub off on the rim area. Also the weight will be normal.
