Thanks Bats. I actually bought like 10 rolls worth of wheats for $2 each from my local shop and just grabbed handfuls out of a bin till I had ten rolls. I started to sort them and actually pulled five decent woody's out while sorting, 2 of which were really good examples. Then I started noticing they were all kind of crappy dates with quite a few older wheats but culls basically. Then I found this in my first 10 pennies. With just the woody's and this, I think I made out and still have to go theough the rest. Def not on par with the stuff you manage to find on a daily basis but I'll take it.

Thanks. Just my little $6 clip on macro lens from Walmart and my $40 basic samsung phone. |

You are living proof that you don't need fancy equipment, just an inexpensive lens, a camera phone, and good lighting (defused works best). When you see members struggling with their camerawork in their posts, please speak up and tell them what you use, that might be a great confidence builder for them! Your photography is fantastic! |

Thanks again. I honestly almost always do because of how much I struggled in the beginning. I just spent a night trying different methods and once I figured out that as long as I had good lighting, turned off the flash, and angled the coin the right way it made all the difference in the world. Phone cameras have come such a long way that most people can take decent photos as long as they get the right lighting. I literally have a stand up lamp in my room with LED bulbs that I use and pop on the macro if I need a close up.

Is the lens plastic? It has that type of look on the images. Glass lens are better for micro photos.

No, its glass. It's a decent little vivitar set I got with macro, fish eye and wide angle. The lighting is wierd in some angles because it was super bright but I get better resolution. Plus I had the lens and I zoomed in 2.5x's as well. it's hard to hold my phone perfectly still and at that magnification it blurs with the slightest movement.

The brighter images was probably caused by reflection off the glass. Best light angles is downward, above the coin with a diffused light source. (The difusser cuts down glare) unwanted room lights can also create glare. The secret to preventing these unwanted light issues, is to determine the direction, by placing your hand between the unwanted light sources, then blocking that light. A hanging piece of paper can do the trick.   Edited by coop
