1. Water
2. #0000 steel wool
3. Brasso polishing compound
and
4. Mr. Clean magic eraser

wash first, then brasso and steel wool over the surface until the gunk is gone. rinse, then the eraser to polish the copper surface.

Rinse again and dry briskly.

I'll go get some photos of my copper to show you 'before' and after'.

Do not do this unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you don't, let your copper stay dirty

*DO NOT do this to coins at all. EVER!

Before

After

All done

Well, April 1st is on the way isn't it?
You got me there.

I think you need to rub harder with a cloth. I clean mine with Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish. Rinse with window cleaner.

Yeah, well, I have been told that I have a twisted sense of humor....

edit: I can't think of no better place to do this - it works in so well.

Just the thing for degraded Zincolns, except that 200 grade carborundum wet 'n dry paper should be used.

Unfortunately, someone will try this on an Indian Head because they missed that last sentence. Too funny.
