Could be a counterfeit? That happened back then. Is there a mintmark over the dome on the reverse?

These are 1944, but there are other years.

To CCF , can you post photos obverse and reverse of the coin that you don't think is Silver ? Bear in mind that those Nickels only contain 35% silver ,so it won't be like droping a 90% silver Quarter .

The streaking looks like a coating that has unevenly worn off. If not a coating, perhaps it was dipped in some sort of chemical that left a stain. Somehow it was exposed to "something" that left a residue. Overall, the cause isn't important, it's simply post mint damage. It could be the silver tarnishing, but I don't think it would tarnish unevenly..I also don't think it's a coin clashing either considering the area it covers (looking at the reverse). Celebrate the fact it is a wartime silver nickel, otherwise it's basically an almost 80 year old coin with a fair amount of wear to it.

At 350 silver do not expect have the sound. 9% manganese and 56% coper. must sound like a coper. Sound it is not the best test. 800 Si and 900Si at the same dimension and weight do not have same sound.
