To CCF , sounds like you bought a so-called unsearched roll of wheat cents . As Keith12 says '' I hope you didn't pay too much for it '' . This is just a bait roll that some E-bay sellers who are trying to con Newbies into thinking that the roll contains some goodies . You have to open that roll but don't expect to find anything to talk about other than those 2 coins . At least now you are educated into what not to buy on the internet .

I'd say go ahead and open it. Let us know what you find. Photos of the roll might be helpful.

Opened the roll, mostly teens and 20s, smattering of 30s, 40s, 50s.. any that had a mint mark were S mint, except for a couple Ds.

Bought the roll mainly hoping there might be a couple more civil war tokens or Indians but satisfied with the one token I got.

Don't expect to find any key or semi-key dates in those rolls, but do check for rpms and dds...I had some good luck with those kind of rolls... with the above statements but I don't think the sellers look closely at "common" cents...Also stand firm on your bid amount

to CCF good luck on future finds, have fun and keep asking when in need...

I'm by no means a pro and will never claim to be...just my 2 cents

If I were to sell penny rolls on that site, is "spiking" the rolls like that considered legit? Or frowned upon?

Maybe I was being na´ve, but I assumed the roll "might" have been a bank roll and the seller (on Mercari) described it thusly:

"You will receive the same Roll in the pictures above. All that I can promise you is the 2 coins that I can see both ends of this roll has been crimped. Thanks for looking.
This Roll has a nice 1863 Civil War Token and a Nice 1925 S. Wheat penny."

If I'd thought the roll had been spiked or salted, I would not have purchased it.

Definitely frowned upon.

They got you. Unfortunately, a lot of unsuspecting people fall for these scams.
