Looks like it has been treated in acid to remove the copper cladding. Post-mint damage, just a spender (though I do like the look of the Lincoln Memorial in that zinc color, very snazzy)

Most people think it is from a cigarette lighter, some think it is a plating issue.

But note the roughness of the zinc is still there, thus I feel the cigarette lighter and burning the coins plating off. (thus the darkened areas) Bar hoppers trying to burn up their money, while waiting for their next karaoke song to sing.
