I have this penny with a hole in the middle and countermarks arround. Because some colonial issues have a hole and marks I was wondering if this one was used aswell as a colonial issue? Or is this farfetched?
Size suggests a British pure copper Penny from Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint.
If this modified coin was ever intended to be re used as currency, a probable theory is that it could have been used as a plantation token. Counter stamped Chinese characters suggest perhaps on a Malayan rubber plantation. (All guesswork on my part).
