What kind of camera and which lens are you using? It's possible that the minimal focusing distance of your lens is too long, and you may need to increase the distance from camera to coin, then crop the resulting photo. If that doesn't provide satisfactory pictures, you could buy a macro lens, or you could try using a phone camera (that can often get high quality photos).
I just use my mobile phone, but take pics of coins using the free app Cozy Magnifier & Microscope. It is fantastic for taking highly detailed photos of small items like coins or stamps.
