Except for 3 scarce dies, all 1858's have a broken vine at 13 and ALL of the '59's like wise.

The top one is the scarcest, being full-vine and 15 stems(#9 broken). The bottom one is full-vine and 16 stems. Here's what stokrocky wrote about the full-vine 15 stem for the 2011 Charlton:

"The stem to leaf #9 broke during the sinking of the 4th working die in 1858. Only this single die had a completely intact vine, 15 unbroken leaf stems and one broken stem. The vine inside leaf 13 and other stems broke during the sinking of the 5th working die, making this the last working die with an intact vine."

And I was mistaken about only 3 dies had a full vine. There were actually 4 unbroken vines, 3 with 16 stems and 1 with 15 stems. All, are quite scarce

Thanks, Bill, I did say that and stand by it. The first coin is a common die variety, to be honest without looking it up I cannot quote my own die number on it.

Gidgit's first coin is a very scarce RA4 die variety. I
have only seen a handful of those and none in mint state.

Gitdit's second coin is a full vine, but without the book in front of me, I do not remember which one. It has also been cleaned.

I wrote the 1858 book 14 years ago. It hardly seems possible.

And 10 years since the 2011 Charlton guide large cent section. THANKS Rob! for all the hard work you (and okiecoiner) put into these books. You opened up the world of large cents for a lot of collectors, including me.

here are my 5 cents worth of full vines 58:
both are raw at this time and I am wondering what grades they could get @ ICCS?

Both 16 stem. The first might get a 62 BN, but the color is off and ICCS doen't care about the surface. The secondF-15, maybe VF-20 on a good day, but cleaned.
