Out of Nine 1971 proof sets, Three of the sets have the Lincoln Cents with these lines on Lincoln's facial hair, just curious if the dies for these were re-engraved/enhanced?
Any thoughts?
Coins are in mint set holders.

I have seen these before but haven't looked into them much.

VV does note a reengraved master die for the 1971-S cents ODV-028: http://varietyvista.com/01a%20LC%20...arieties.htm

I think its just another reengraved master die if it's not the same as -028.

I thought Jaime Hernandez had done a write up on these but cannot find it. Here is a doubled die on PCGS that you can see it on though.

@Chase007, Do all of them have the same aggressive die polishing in the field between TRUST and the date?

I, too, have never seen these before. Interesting!

Dearborn, I too come to notice these just recently as well, I have four more sets that I'll have to look at, I agree they are interesting.
makecents, thanks for the link, yes I see them.
fortcollins, my bad for not mentioning, the streaks you see in the images are from the mint casing and are not on the coin.

I think his (Jaime's), thought process, was this was a re-engraved die too. I did not include that earlier.

I've been looking at REDs, CAM's and DCAM's, on different sites that have high res pics and have yet to find one that does not show some degree of this anomaly, some are just stronger than others. Seems odd that the design for just this year/mm proof would be different though, so this leads me to believe it was some attempt at re-engraving, maybe that area was weak. Very cool and unusual looking though.

@Chase007, Thanks! That eliminates the possibility that the lines were done accidentally during die polishing. Very interesting find, and again that's one I have not seen before. I was going to ask how this got by the quality inspectors, but this was the era of several of the no-S proofs.

Sounds like a certain new Dad we know should do a die study, huh?

Hah! That's not a bad idea. Do you remember Jaime doing something with this?
