On Friday, January 28th, 2022, I saw this coin in a 100 ruble bargain bin, realized that it was something I've been trying to find for many years, and immediately bought it. Here's a small puzzler for the people of CCF: can you guess what exactly it was that I was looking for? (I thought this was easy, but I've posted it in multiple places on Discord, and only received one correct answer so far - from @Grinya.)   Hint: there's a reason I oriented the pictures the way I did - particularly the first one! @gxseries - this should hopefully be right up your alley. @Grinya - please no spoilers! |

I know that these early Russian coppers were often overstruck on previous coins, whenever they changed the weight system. So I'm guessing it's a scarce undertype/overstrike combination?

It's 1727 5 kopek. It can be a bit dear even as a filler piece. Though I do have to admit that I might have bought it for the clear variety anyway! But that wasn't the main draw. |

It looks like a Fouree - a layered counterfeit with the upper layer corroded away exposing the corroded surface below.

Less of a hint and more of an interesting observation: as far as I can tell, my oldest CCF post mentioning that I was looking for this dates back to April 2012.
@Lembafc - not as far as I can tell, but interesting guess!

Orienting the first photo that way makes it look like Saint Andrew's cross.  And it looks like there are remnants of a legend around the rim. Overstrike on a Brunswick coin? Edited by tdziemia

The coin appears to be another type of metal, silver? But what do I know.

All I can guess is as you dropped the hint is the orientation of the coin. It would be classified as die rotation error but there are a few known for this series.
