Hello, this is my first time posting here and I know nothing about coins. Anyways, my mom found an old coffee can that was filled with silver dollars (the vast majority of them Morgan dollars) and seeing that the dates on them were anywhere from 1878-1920 I figured they must have some value. I went on Wikipedia (not the best source, I know) and I saw a table that said how many of each coin were minted. After looking through most of them, here were the rarest coins I found (all of them are Morgan dollars): 1879 minted in Carson City, two from 1903 minted in San Francisco, and two from 1892 minted in San Francisco. Again, I know nothing about coins, all of the stuff I just typed I'm basing off of what I saw on various websites. If anyone has any idea how much these are worth, your help would be much appreciated (and I know that the condition weighs into the value a lot, but that would be kind of hard to describe). Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, you first must go out and buy some reading material and at least get an idea of what you have and see the different grades and values, the book is called the official Red Book a guide book of United States coins 2008 or the newest edition( they print one every year since1947). Some of the years you have mentioned are some key dates and depending upon the condition, bring some nice dollars. Do your self a big favor and get this book, good luck, Mike ps: This book can be found in most good book stores and some good coin shops....

Go buy the Dansco album and start trying to find the ones you are missing!! :)
If you are looking to sell/value them, then you are going to need to post pictures for us to help grade them.

Another good way is type the details into ebay search , watch the auction and you'll gain an idea of what people are actually paying. Watch several and youll soon whittle it down to one much like yours in grade perhaps.

I would say the first one is VG and the others in that VF30-XF40 range. I am not the best grader in the world, but that is my take.

Nice coins , something about Morgans , I collect them now too and never thought I would , just takes one to get the ball rolling , those are nice. A premier coin up there with the British crown and Canadian maple for sheer "feel it in your hand" worth.

Just wondering- what do "VG" and "VF30-XF40 range" mean? Sorry, you can tell I'm new at this.

http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/price...icesgd.shtml It is the condition. VF30 is choice very fine and XF means extra fine VG means very good I would have some others give their thoughts on condition. I am far from an expert. That 1879 CC is worth a few hundred dollars for sure. -SWUSC

The members here are very helpful & knowledgeable on this subject & many others also. With that said, I'm going to try to put a grade on your coins. This will make for great practice. coin #1-1892S G8 #2-1892S F10 #3-1879CC F15 #4-1903S F12 #5-1903S Vf20

I don't think there is a F10 grade. It is either VG10 or F12 or F15. F=Fine, VG=very good

Yea I must be way to easy on my grades of morgans. In lower grades...then a couple hundred is more likely based on ebay auctions. Go over to ebay and search for your dates.... I know there is a G04 1879 CC that is professional grade for sell right now... I just looked. -SWUSC
