This is the 50 cent sub-thread of my quest to noodle a full set of Australian decimal circulation coins from scratch. http://goccf.com/t/419886There are currently 68 circulating Australian 50 cent coins. The first Australian 50 cent coin was released in 1966, was round, and was made of 0.8 silver (3 of these coins make 1 ounce of silver) Naturally they were targeted for their silver content and quickly disappeared from circulation. They occasionally turn up in circulation usually because a kid nicks one from their parent's collection and spends it. The 50 cent coin was redesigned in 1969 as a 12-sided coin. Note: No 50 cent coins were minted in 1967 and 1968 No 50 cent coins were released into circulation in 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1992. These coins can only be found in mint sets. There are also two sought after varieties I hope to find: 2000 incuse millenium and 2010 upset. Other varieties which shouldn't be too hard to find are 1979 and 1980 double bar, 1994 wide date, 2000 millennium fat letters. Edited by MachinMachinMan 04/04/2022 09:16 am

I guess I should show what the reverse of a standard Australian 50 cent coin looks like. and here's a couple of "double bar" coins (1979 and 1980)

Quote: I have about 10 of the 1966's if you need one. Thanks princetane but they would only count if you cashed them in at the bank and the tellers unwittingly passed them on to me. If you spent one at the shop I don't think it would get past the cashier.

well done. It's nice to be able to get together so many of the 50c coins issued for circulation. any 1966 50c with the double bars anyone ? there is also a 1993 50c variety - the "93" is a little fatter

Can't wait for you to start the dollars, the 50 cents and $2 are a picnic next to those. Of all the Australian circulation coins - the dollar is by far the most commemorated of the lot!

Day 4Besides some minor upgrades to some of the grubbier coins I found last time, the second 50 cent noodling session (another $200 bag) resulted in the finding of only 2 new coins. 2000 Royal Visit (with unique effigy of the queen designed by Vladimir Gottwald) and a Mighty Queensland Centenary of Federation coin. Total number of 50 cent coins noodled: 800 Coins found: 59 Coins to find: 9

4 State Federation coins in the first 1000 coins? You seem to have a Midas touch! Keep it up!
I've never heard of a 1966 rounder being found in circulation at least for 20 years. Reckon only hope will be someone shoving coins that have been out of circulation for 40-50 years back into circulation. Good luck!

Day 16Noodled another $200 bag and found 2 more coins on my list 2001 Centenary of Federation: Western Australia 1993 has a mintage of less than 1 million Judging by the extremely high number of 2021 coins I am finding (almost 10%), the mintage number of 1.4 million will surely increase when the next RAM annual report is released. Still looking for 1966, 1985, 1991 Rams Head, 2001 ACT and 2017 Mabo Total number of 50 cent coins noodled: 1600 Number of different coins found: 63 Number of coins still to find: 5
