I was looking at my 1932P Washington quarter and was wondering if the tailfeathers could have been re-touched or what the marks just below each tailfeather could be. I do not believe it is PMD because the marks are contoured to each tailfeather seemingly to me, and to the far left it looks like an extra feather or it could possibly be PMD but the shape looks consistant. I have looked and connot find any info on any retouching done on 1932 tailfeathers. None of my other 1930s quarters have these marks. Thanks in advance for looking and any thoughts or comments.      |

I noticed this weak tail feather design for a long time. I've seen when they have enhanced it. But it never occurred to me until this question, that the design was too weak from the beginning. Thus in 1965 when they made these feathers stronger, I always thought it was a worn master hub issue, but it was a weak design that was at fault. Never considered this before. Thanks for the question. Learned something new today.  |

Thanks coop, so are the marks below and to the left of the tail feathers enhancement or re-touched?

Just part of the normal design. The lines from engraving are on a different year and a lot stronger. 1957-D:  |

ok Thanks coop, I was trying to figure out the marks just below each tailfeather almost like Machine Doubling but they look more like scratches purposely placed |

There is a lot of Machine Doubling, but usually affects the taller devices, but it looks like affected the feathers on your coin also. Not a premium for the coin. |

Looks like circulation damage to me , the coin in general is loaded with tiny ticks .

Thanks T-BOP, it does have alot of small nicks, these under the tail feathers just looked different and they are not incuse. I did not see any hits under any of the feathers that pushed any metal, so I was just curious.

what it is interesting with your coin it is the leaf over A in DOLLARD. Me in my new study I say this it is Type A IB. Basically till 1938 inclusive, this leaf almost missing. I think that not many was full leaf. Will be a new attribution?! I do not know but I know very well that is uncommon to find one with full leaf for 1932 till 1938 from all Mints. PS. I know peoples are skeptical of this variety. Just look at the PCGS best photos. Thanks. Edited by silviosi
