Hi I'm new to this but I came across a 1943 copper penny. Did a magnet test and it doesn't stick. Any advice to what I should do next with it? Thank you   |

Approximately 40ish 1943 copper alloy cents are known to remain in existence. Coin experts speculate that they were struck by accident when copper alloy 1 cent blanks remained in the press hopper when production began on the new steel pennies. Because of its high collector value, the 1943 copper cent has been counterfeited often by coating steel cents with copper or by altering the dates of 1945, 1948, and 1949 pennies. So I joke that finding this is about as likely as turning into rock, becoming invisible, stretchable, or flaming on after exposure to radiation, but its possible as real ones do exist. A quick look on aliexpress shows the current selling price for a 1943-s copper copy is only US $1.40, so even those are plentiful as well which unfortunately makes it far more likely that most who come and post them are counterfeits and not the actual coin. The easiest way to determine if a 1943 cent is made of steel, and not copper, is to use a magnet. If it sticks to the magnet, it is not copper. If it does not stick, the coin might be of copper and should be authenticated by an expert at a grading company etc as the next step but you can post better pics and I'm sure will get some advice from those on the forum. Most 1943 copper fakes are non magnetic from what I have read, clear pictures are needed to judge as these are very blurry. I would say finding a 1943 copper in the wild is more like sorting through a barrel full of glass with you bare hands searching for a diamond that was dropped into it... Better to just not do it  I might eat those words one day but just like the 1936 Canadian dot cent or the 1964 SMS coins your chances of finding one by coincident at probably 1/100,000,000,000,000(if not higher) Should you look, yes, but never get your hopes up with these coins. You will find 100,000,000 fakes before you possibly ever find a real one in the wild. Edited by Wrekkdd

The coin in the picture looks to be lower relief like early years. And whats going on with Lincoln's hair just below "we"? I don't think its real.

That coin looks like a genuine Wheat cent . Odds are saying it's plated but really does not look plated to me . How about some enlarged photos and blow up the date area , |
