I think those surfaces are common for that era, we're just not used to seeing coins enlarged but still in sharp focus.

Did these coins come from original sealed mint cellophane or were they aftermarket in a capitol or similar holder?

They look like business strike coins. They we in cello packaging. If left in the cello, for a long time, they can turn colors. But the Proof coins then that year we also in cello packaging. Even the cents left in cello can still be fingerprint free, but could change color in the cello.   I like buying these coins n the cello. They can contain interesting toning color and sometimes doubled dies that were missed that were over looked. Edited by coop

No acidic environment. Been in same box since the 90s. It's came in a plastic rectangle 5 coin holder. Can't find a connection with the maker of the holder and US Gov.

I don't think the quality control in that time period was the greatest at the mint...I just looked at some 1979 MS and the SBA dollars were really crappy looking. KK |

These plastic holders were after-market holders that collectors could put together "Birth year" sets from regular circulating coins. Those holders are not air tight so if they were ever stored in a humid environment (summertime for instance) and not protected they can get funky looking. Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

I've always found better examples in new rolls of coin than in the Mint sets. They are handled less, and have fewer boo boos. So after the first year of buying I stopped buying mint sets.

Except the SMS a few sets done in Phil, in 1964 was no 5 coins sets in square plastic boxes. Who know who put later in those boxes with fake reproduction of the US Gov. The first of those sets officially come in 1966, and very few was done in 1965 in Phil for SMS sets (around 1000) to satisfy some collectors, so like this they can finish the 1964 production and made in cell the SMS sets in California between mid August and begin of October, Now you have the answer.
Is aftermarket copy of later Mint sets. I presume the material is full of PVC, which the Mint do not use.

We explain you the sets, because like this you can understand that someone put in this holder circulated coins (which you show in photos) who was exposit not only to circulation, but also to environment.

the nickel pics yoi added are from higher grade coins, with lower-resolution, unsharpened images, so their granularity is hidden
