Hope someone has the answer to this. The Canadian Coin News lists 3 varieties of the 1997 Loon dollar:
1997 The Flying Loon
1997 Loon (O)
1997 Loon (W)
How does one tell the difference between O and W varieties, when there don't seem to be any mint marks on any of the coins?

The 1997O and 1997W both appear in the 1997 BU set.
They are located in a different location in the sets and also have a different finish.

You didn't include the 1997 business strike in your varieties.

There was no 1997 dollar issued for circulation in 1997.

Your right Silverwolf, no business strikes between 1997 & 2001.
I forgot about that, corrected my original to avoid confusion.

There is a way to differentiate between O and W 1997 Loons. Coins from Ottawa sets (and from Tiny Treasures set) are similar to 1996 with almost but not quite SP look.
They have flat even rims, sharp legend, slightly frosted crown, and a satin background.
Winnipeg coins are of lower quality in general. A large number of Winnipeg sets contain coins (not just Loonie) that do not have PL characteristics.
They look like a common business strike with sloping uneven rims and rounded letters in the legend. It is NBU with circulation finish.
I guess, Winnipeg mint did not have capacity to produce PL coins and made a shortcut utilizing business strike technology.
