New member here but familiar with the community. Decided to join because I am looking for opinions on the grade of this coin. Picked up this 1839 O Half Dime a few days ago. Hope the images are good enough.

Welcome, O-Mint! It's a nice acquisition from the New Orleans Mint's second year. Sharper images would help with determining the grade, but it looks like a beauty to me. Of course, I'm partial to anything from NOLA.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I will post some hopefully sharper images soon when I can. I am also partial to New Orleans. Hoping to complete a New Orleans mint set.

Best to remove it from the holder first. Do you see how the plastic obscures the detail?

Much better. Hair and bust line details still not sharp. I'll venture a grade of VF-35.

I don't think this coin would straight grade due to the cleaning. If it did it would be net graded down at least 5 points (maybe even 10), so if it straight graded I guess VF30. It's really more like an XF Details - Improperly Cleaned coin.
