Hmm I'm kinda thinking this is MD rather than a doubled die, but I'm not positive. I look forward to seeing what others think. I'd love to be shown wrong!

Quote:
Comments: Mechanical Doubling is seen on the date, the mint mark, LIBERTY, and parts of the profile. This should not be confused with the Class VI doubled die doubling. By itself 1940-S 1˘ WDDO-002 would be on the borderline for Best Of status, but the addition of a minor doubled die reverse gives it a bump upward.

Spence you are right about Mechanical Doubling. The quote give the comments of Wexler.

Mechanical Doubling
Cents before 1990 had the mint mark punched in by hand after the die was made, so a true doubled die before 1990 wouldn't show the same doubling on the mint mark. It is possible to have a doubled die that also shows Machine Doubling, the the doubled die part will still not show on the mint mark., ( I read the above quote and was thinking how can a hand punched mint mark, show Mechanical Doubling?)

@GoodoleAbe: The Mint Mark was punch on the Hub and not on the Die as the folk is believe. So Wexler is right.

I don't think it is. You have the MD that goes along with it, but I can't see any markers. The 9 in the date on yours doesn't have the spread. Can't see the 2 big die cracks on obv or DDR.

Note the affected areas? Note they contour was removed from those areas on this coin. But Machine Doubling can happen on a doubled die.

Note the Coppercoins example. It shows the Machine Doubling on that coin as well, but note the tail on the '9' is wider. So both can happen.
V.V's is not showing Machine Doubling on the stage 'B' example:

But still not convinced the OP's coin is that die though?

Not a match.

@GoodoleAble: What you say is not right. the MM was not punch manually on the dies. The MM was punch on the Hub.
