This is the better of the two St. Gaudens I got today. I may have gotten too excited in getting this one. There are contact marks on some rays and the foot of the 1 got squished by some unlucky hit. The eagle has a few marks on the big feathers. How might it grade If I were to send it to PCGS? Edited by jecz79 02/06/2023 8:48 pm

Might be mint state but with all the contact marks would grade no higher than 62. Coin Facts says there are well over 100,000 examples grading MS-60 or higher. It should be easy to find a more attractive one.

I took the photo under unflattering artificial light, from the side showing all the flaws. Lacking wear from circulation or any big damage, here it would be described only as 'mint condition'. But has these hits from other coins. Until last week I was unfamiliar with US coinage and with using this fine-grainned grading system. Think I understand it better now. Was a bit silly of me. Had about a dozen coins to choose from, picked this one over better looking ones. I'm used to check mintage issue numbers for the year, then between mint condition coins pick the year with the smaller issue. I may have a chance to trade this 1923 back for one of the others I passed over. You have been most helpful! If I can do it, will show images of the new pick later.

I think this one makes it to MS-63.

I swapped it for a 1914 San Francisco one.
My lousy skill at photographing coins may have made it look worse than it was. I either get light from the side highlighting every tiny imperfection, or cover the coin with the phone's shade and can't get details

I will! Just need a sunny day to try to get a passable photo.

Quote: Show us the '14-S! No sun today when I was free. The best I could do with arificial light is most of the reverse focuses. This larger coin is harder to get properly but the angle should show the texture. I must say, the eagle is a stunning design!
