I found this 1973D in my pocket change and what caught my eye was the excellent condition. After looking more closely I found areas of questionable errors (or other unknown cause) on the observerse as well as the reverse of the coin. Please refer to arrows on images. On the obverse side the area is involving the back of Lincoln"s coat and on the reverse the left side of the memorial in between the first and last pilar, just above the pillars andoutside thememorial in the area of the O in ONE.

The die subsidence error matches perfectly except in one of the referenced articles it states that this error does not effect the obverse of the coin and this 1973D has an error on the obverse as well. Is the obverse error unrelated or relative to the reverse die subsidence error? Thanks for your help.

Is the error on the obverse (back of Lincolns jacket) of the coin related to the reverse die subsidence error?

Myisland, I am a novice at best, so would have to let folks that do this for a living give you the best answer. But, in my novice opinion, they are related. I have only seen the humpback paired with this reverse die, never on it's own and find it very hard to believe, there is no correlation. This peon's opinion.

I've never noticed the evidence of this on the obverse, but looking at the dies size of devices, the dies were already over polished at the time your coin was struck. So another die clash may have cause the obverse to show this die event. Not a premium for this, but just die event progressively moving towards retirement. Only say on Red example of die polishing on that similar area:

So I will be saving your images for progression of the die subsidence. Here are the edited images.

This is the first 1973-D cent I've encountered with a recurring die subsidence error in which the obverse die also shows signs of deformation. I'm not sure if the slight bulge in the field to the left of Lincoln's coat is standard Die Deterioration or a true die deformation error. The step along the back of Lincoln's coat may be Machine Doubling. It would presumably be unrelated to the other defects.
