I actually found this sane exact penny too! How do I go about getting it graded and find a value of it if I'm interested in selling it possibly? Thanks for any advice in advance! Edited by Jblau190 03/17/2023 6:22 pm

@jlba, first welcome to CCF. Second, best practice is to start a new thread for each new coin so I have split off your replies from that earlier thread. For reference, it can be found here: http://goccf.com/t/412237&whichpage=2#3813447Finally, congratulations on your find. Folks will be along to help answer your questions.

to the CCF That is a nice Cud find. It grades likely in the XF range and is worth a few dollars to someone who collects these. Check eBay sold listings for a better assessment on pricing. That said - I suggest you do not even consider having this coin evaluated and graded by a TPG. That would cost you $20 to $30 at the least and is way more than the coin is worth.

Congrats on a great find. I agree with not having it graded. I sold my only Cud, like the size of yours on ebay for $188 in less than two days. Good luck!

Apparently a PCGS Price Guide lists an MS64 at $750. Only 2 known graded examples someone posted in original post I was split from. Listed in the CPG as FS-401

Yours is probably not in MS condition based on the pics, but even so I think I would have it graded. That said, one quickly gets into which grading service and all that and cost will vary wildly. Best bet, even if a bit hard to do, might be to find someone else submitting an error set to PCGS and piggyback you coin on their submission. That would keep your grading fees down to just $70 and put it in the holder it probably should be in. A true rarity and brilliant find, I believe it is one of only five known and accepted type II counterclashes from the Lincoln series.

Fantastic find and it is FS-401! I agree with Tropicalbats that this is worth grading as there are only seven type II counterclashes (according to Mike Diamond in CoinWorld 12/19/22) known to exist.

Im not naive, I understand its only worth whatever a person that wants it is willing to pay for anything when comes to this type of item. Just want some opinions from people that have more knowledge in this type of thing if worth getting graded/certified if its possibly worth anywhere close to few hundred dollars/potentially $750 even (although like I said, I'm not one of those that assumes its worth that cuz someone bought the same error penny for that somewhere before). Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your quick responses!

I'd say it's in the $200 neighborhood. It doesn't appear MS (though the photos aren't great) so it's not going to get top dollar.

I've never seen one of these sell, and I think there are 6 examples graded by PCGS. Very rare. Without auction data it seems PCGS just sort of guessed as to what the value might be, as their estimated value at AU 53 is $32. So with no reasonable price guide, and a very high rarity, next you look at popularity and desirability which also drive price. I'd say this one is highly unpopular as few even know it exists. Note it took you actually adding another reply here telling the CCF experts what the coin actually was. Desirability would be super high if it were in MS grade, as then it would be a registry coin. But with only six graded, still kinda close to a registry coin anyway. Plus collectors who just love a rarity would go pretty strong after this one. So my guess would be that you could probably put the coin somewhere around $600, but again, that's just a guess based on other similar coin sales. Of note, there has lately been a mad rush to buy Lincoln cent registry coins, so if it were in a PCGS slab right now would possibly be the best time to sell it if that were your goal. Some of the rarities went for more than two times value over the last couple months.

Is there any preferred places to post coins for sale that might be best for collectors to find it? I'm not set on selling it but if its worth 500+, id consider putting it up for sale. Just not sure the best way to go about it or if worth grading/if will raise or lower the possible value on my end. Is ebay the go to or are there better options for posting it for sale? Thanks for all your guys help and quick responses! I wouldn't even know what I truly had without this forum! Thanks!

By the way just a little backstory I recently started getting into seeking out error coins specifically Lincoln Memorial pennies by checking any pennies in my change or that I happen upon around my house several months ago and anytime I find a penny on the ground I'll scoop it up regardless of the way it looks or the quality or condition and check it when I have a chance with a magnifying glass and some lighting. This coin was one of the first that I happened upon either my first or second day of getting into this habit. I found it on the sidewalk outside my local convenience store just by chance, didn't even realize it had any significance until I looked at it closer at home several hours later guess I just got lucky.
