After reaching out to several dealers and many experts (and "experts") on Reddit, I am looking for what these coins might grade. I've gotten anywhere from MS63 - AU details to about everything in between. I got it at an auction in a third-tier authenticator slab (thus, I'm going to send it off to NGC for grading), but in the meantime, am hoping I get some of your thoughts. It's only been seen in person by two dealers and both put it in the AU-range. Online dealers are all over the place (which is understandable since they can't see it). Coin Snap (which, I know is not perfect) puts it at MS consistently. This is a great looking coin and with good luster. The only real fear I have is potential cleaning (though, there are no hair line marks to indicate this). Thank for you help! *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

Please crop and enlarge your pics and show them right-side up. This would be best for starting a discussion on such an important coin. to the CCF!

Looks just a bit better than my 1798 $5 gold that I got a couple of months ago - mine graded at XF-details. With that said, I'm at AU-details. With better photos, I might change my grade, but that's where I'm at for now.

Photos are a little grainy, first impression is AU details.

Can you please post a picture of the full slab? If it's authentic, looks like AU coin to me, but I am not an expert in early US gold!

i rotated and cropped the photos. the coin is $5 not $10 as described. the only $10 1798 are both overdates of 1798/7 this is a large 8 and appears to be BD2 variety with that die break. with only 50-70 known the coin would be R5 if authentic. based on the value I would consider PCGS over NGC on this one as it would return a higher value tough call due to all the surface issues. AU58 or MS62 my question would be if the coin was authentic why wasnt it sent to PCGS rather than a 3rd party grader as the coin, if MS, could be close to 6 figures. I'm suspicious of this one. if authentic the surfaces look like they may have been cleaned if it is authentic but the glare from these photos is not helping. here is the BD-2 variety with the die break

I'm in the AU-58 to MS-62 range as well. I would have to see this one in-hand to properly grade. Nice coin!
I'm curious what auction you acquired her? A local auction or a well known auction house such as Heritage?

The surfaces look really off. That's why I'd like to see what "slab" this is in, because it has NGC-style thick prongs, but it's not NGC.

I'm curious about this one as well. Others have much better educated opinions than me, but my Two Cents is it looks a little off, possibly from being cleaned. Without the provenance of how and where is was acquired, its hard to say if its authentic, even holdered. (depending who holdered it) So for now, i'll just sit here and

Looks like all the die cracks match up, both sides. Want to see the holder as well.

Looks real, but with the pebbly look of an ex-jewelry piece. I expect there is edge and/or rim damage consistent with a bezel mount. AU details, and still a valuable coin in spite of the damage.
