Hi everyone,

I was wondering if someone might be able to help identify which variety of 1859 cent this is (graded ICCS MS-62 Narrow 9; Low 9 Red & Brown); appears to have a re-engraved '5' & a re-punched '9' if I'm using that terminology correctly):

First of all the best advice I got was to use this site https://www.vickycents.com/

Second - it is at times easier to start with die cracks but your doubled 59 is a good start.

I am guessing PC59-248 (using the die crack at leaf 2) but need better scans to be sure. When you figure it out use this site to get an idea of rarity https://www.vickycents.com/rarity-r...article.html

Fairly hard to find coin. Nice catch Hax 9 or 10, but now I see that I'm completely wrong once others chimed in. Sorry, and I'll stay with my other Vicky varieties and not '59's.

Yep, now I know why I never went headlong into the Haxby system, but rather stayed with my own "variety" nomenclature and names. Yes, I think 218 after my NZ friend ID'd it. I thought that it was a 9 or 10 and looked no farther than the stem at 8. It looks like 218 to me now, and I looked for some of mine and I'm supposed to have 12 of them, as ID'd by Phil 210, but I can't find a single one on/in my desk. Maybe Gidjit will chime in to say that he has them all.

When folks say it is 218 and therefor a Haxby 9 or 10 I am confused.
Would you share where are you getting the rarity info from?
I was using the chart on the Haxby website which would make it a 1 - but perhaps I am using it incorrectly? Thanks

You are correct that the PC59-218 is R-1 on the rarity scale.

It is a common die pair, but also is the only reverse die from reverse group O which has a leaf stem at leaf 8, but not at leaf 10. It has a nice re-punched 9 also. All that makes it interesting, but not scarce.

What I meant in my post that the coin was a 9 or 10 meant a Haxby 9 or Haxby 10 based on the leaf and partially the 5 as well. It didn't mean an R-9.

Thanks for everyone's help in identifying the variety; I went through the vickycents website and also came up with PC59-218.
