Hello, my friend found this while digging a trench. He was in middle Ga. on an a rather old farmhouse location. I have no more info beyond that. The obverse is blank looks rather primitive as far as finish not very flat or smooth. I told him if anyone knows they would be found here. Thanks for any help. It is 2-3/4"in diameter.

Any chance that you could provide some of the wording from the bottom?

@tile, it is always best to supply pics of both sides to help with the identification. Please add that when you get a chance. Thx.

With that said, I found a late-17th Century silver medal with a similar reverse. Your appears to have been gilt or plated, so may very well have been made later. Here is a link to the auction to help you with your research:

It sounds to me like a uniface copy of the medal listed in the MA-Shops link: a French medal dated 1687 commemorating the restoration of French king Louis XIV to health following painful and experimental surgery.

There is a bronze non-uniface restrike of this medal in the ANS medal collection: http://numismatics.org/collection/0000.999.44445

So restrikes of this medal are known.
